Hi everyone and welcome to Sweatin with Sevaun.  I’m Sevaun and for those who don’t know, I’m your hostess!  Someone once said I look just like a hostess twinkie…not sure that that means, but I’m sure it’s a compliment!  Anyway tonight we have a very Special Guest….from Cats Cover, here’s Buffy!

Hi everyone, I’m Buffy and despite having the same name as a female vampire slayer, I am a boy.  My birthday is March 4, 2007.  I lived the first 7 months of my life outside.  It was a hard first 7 months but I did the best I could.  One day someone caught me in a net and took me to this place with lots of cages and other cats; lots of cats.

Some days some people would walk by my cage and say “pretty color” but then they would whisper things like “he’s a stray…he may be wild…he needs to be outdoors…he’ll never get adopted.”  Then I overheard the people talking one day saying “what a shame, such a pretty thing…he’ll be put down on Friday…we’re just too full.  So sad for him.”

I heard the other cats say that this was a shelter and after you’ve been there a while and they determine that no one will ever want you, they take you to this room and you never come back.  I really didn’t want to go to that room.

And then the next day I met momma Jacci.  She said someone had called her about me.  She held me in her arms and asked me if I’d like to come live with some of her other cats in a place called Cats Cove.  She said I would be loved, and fed and kept safe.  I said “yes please”.  So she put me in her truck and drove me home.

I love my home.  I love my brothers and sisters.  The best thing about here is that I get to go outside and lay in the sun.  I think the sun was made for me.  There’s nothing like laying on the grass on a sunny day and just soaking up the sunshine.  I get to have so many friends here.  Donna always makes sure to say hi to me.  She rubs me under my chin and I just love that.  Paul makes sure I have a clean blankie by the window so I can be sure to catch the sunrays.

Some of my brothers and sisters like to chase the chickens and peacocks.  I don’t.  They are my friends too.  Sometimes I go over to the geese and lay right alongside them.  They never bother me.  We are good buddies.

I like when the volunteers come over to me and talk to me.  They say the funniest things and always look into my eyes when they talk to me.  They make sure I’m listening, and I always am.  Sometimes I even listen in on their conversations with each other.  I overheard them talking a few days ago and one of them was saying that April was Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.  They were talking about how cruel some people can be to animals and especially cats.  That got me thinking back to when I was at that shelter.

There were so many cats there that had been neglected or even beaten by people.  There were so many little kittens that were so weak they couldn’t stand up.  Some of them just kept crying and crying.  I have often wondered how many of them were taken into that room they talked about.

Momma Jacci once told me that here there would never be a cat that could be saved that wouldn’t be saved.  She told me that it didn’t matter where we came from, or what our personalities were like, that we could be ourselves.  We could be the cat we were meant to be.  I’ve always been allowed to be the cat that I want to be, ever since momma Jacci took me home.  So I was thinking about the whole Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month and wondering why it was only for a month.  I wish it was every day that people thought about doing things to prevent cruelty to animals, all animals but especially us cats.

Sometimes momma Jacci will come in the Cove and just sit with us and talk with us.  She’ll tell us about what’s happening in the center.  For the past month she’s been telling us about all the cute little kittens that have come in.  She said as much as she loves them, she wishes there weren’t so many kittens because for all the ones she has there are so many others that end up somewhere else.  Some, like me who spend the first 7 months of their life outside seeing all my littermates disappear one by one.  Some end up in that place I was first taken to and maybe they find a home like I did or maybe they are taken to that room that momma Jacci saved me from.

Sevaun said I should tell you what my favorite treat or toy is, but instead I thought I’d share my favorite quote:

“When an unloved creature suffers and dies, Heaven rages and Angels cry”.

I’m done Sevaun.

Thanks Buffy.  I, well ok…for tonight’s exercise let’s do something different.  Let’s exercise our brains, ok.  Let’s all think about just 5 ways we can help to prevent cruelty, not only to animals but to everyone.  We’ll see you tomorrow and remember to not only lick your hoomin but tell them thanks for letting you be you.

UPDATE:  On March 13, 2013, Dear Sweet Buffy passed away.  He came to FFRC because he was unwanted and knew nothing but love and the feeling that he was wanted and that he mattered ever since.  There was no suffering, only tears from those who remain.
